Handoffs That Move Work

Connect every handoff to its objective, open questions, owner, and next action so delivery keeps moving.

A handoff is not complete because a file has been shared. The receiving team needs enough context to continue the work without reconstructing earlier conversations. That does not require a long document. It requires agreement about what is ready, what remains open, and who will resolve the gaps.

Agree on readiness together

Ask the receiving team what it needs to begin. Design, engineering, marketing, and support may each need different evidence or decisions. A checklist written by only one side can miss the information the other side relies on.

Keep readiness criteria specific to the work. A small copy change and a new customer workflow should not require identical documentation simply because they pass through the same process.

Expose unresolved questions

List what has not been decided and explain whether it blocks the next step. This prevents a polished deliverable from implying that every question has been settled.

Give important open questions an owner. The person receiving the work should know where to go for a decision, rather than sending the same request to several teams and waiting for someone to respond.

Confirm the next action

End the handoff with a shared understanding of what happens next. That might be implementation, another review, a customer test, or a request for missing information.

When work is returned, record why. Repeated gaps can reveal that the readiness definition needs to change. Use those patterns to improve the handoff instead of treating every return as an isolated mistake.

A practical next step

Choose one recurring handoff and write a short readiness agreement with the receiving team. Review it after the next two transfers and remove anything that does not help.
